This DVR/DVD recorder combo is just what I was looking for. The only drawback is that it is fairly complicated and challenging to set up and use; this is a function of its many, many features, and actually is pretty exciting to a geek like me. Complaining about its complexity is a little like blaming a Ferrari for not having an automatic transmission. The manual is 128 pages, a case of TMI for many consumers. But it has features upon features, and I can't wait to get to know it even better. At least initially, I can say that it records very high quality video on the hard drive, pauses live TV, plays DVDs as expected, copies programs recorded on the Hard Drive to DVDs as it should, all without monthly charges for TIVO or Comcast. It also works with both analog and digital cable TV, if you still have the minimum cable service, (and antennas, apparently), which isn't too clear in the info provided in the on-line ads. For the really adventurous, the HDD is upgradeable to much higher capacity for very little additional investment. See [...] If you want a lot of features, don't feel like paying subscription fees to TIVO or Comcast, and don't mind a somewhat steep learning curve, I recommend this thing wholeheartedly.

still partly unfunctional - Mikey P - Knoxville TN
This is a very late review and I'm not looking for anything from anybody, but I wouldn't reccomend buying any of these refurbs of this particular model. This is the second one of these DVR's that I've bought. This one had to be replaced when I got a totally smashed one shipped to me. When I got this one, it took me a while to hook it up fully and use it. When I did I noticed that it wasn't starting most of the recordings I scheduled. It's tuning well and I can use it manually to record and i guess I was just too lazy to return another one.

Tried Two of Them, Neither Worked - JA - Southest USA
We purchased this unit in an attempt to replacing our aging Philips DVDR3576H DVD Recorder with 160GB Hard Disc and Built-In Tuner which has been an outstanding unit but was getting worn with all its usage over the last few years.br /br /The first Maganavox H2160MW9 unit would not format DVD+RWs. It raced up to 90% formatted and then went off to la-la land and stayed there for hours if you let it. Had to unplug it to bring it back to earth. So Amazon.com graciously exchanged it for another unit . . . which did exactly the same thing. Amazon.com graciously refunded our money.br /br /To end on a positive note, since this ill-fated unit, Magnavox has learned how to make a working HDD/DVD recorder with tuner, the "MAGNAVOX MDR513H/F7 HDD and DVD Recorder with Digital Tuner, Black". You'll see a very positive review for that one written by me.
