dissapointed - R. Gier - NY USA
I am very dissapointed with this machine. I bought it to convert my old VHS tapes to DVD and it will not do it. It claims that they are all copy protected. I am checking out other options right now.
BEWARE: DVDs Won't Play On Any Other Machine! - M. E. Raines - Wisconsin
I bought this machine through Amazon for several projects where I needed to make DVDs of some of my VHS tapes. One of the projects involved editing the duplicated DVDs for some business films. After I purchased the Sony RDR-VX535, at a cost higher than it is currently, I was able to copy DVDs from my tapes just fine, but after going through the time and expense of copying, labeling, packaging and mailing some of these DVD duds as special Christmas presents, I learned to my chagrin that they wouldn't play or even register on ANY other computer (Mac or PC) or DVD player except the Sony used to duplicate them! This made the machine useless to me, as I need to be able to edit the DVDs. What a waste of my time and money, on top of the embarrassment of sending my friends useless gifts! The fact that the duplicated DVDs won't play in other players should be disclosed clearly to people who are thinking of purchasing the machine.br /br /I hate to write a negative review, but I am so disappointed; this has been a tremendous rip-off. Sony will never be able to steal money from me again, because I won't ever buy another one of their products.

One Defect After Another - Nick - NH, USA
First off, let me say that I really wanted this bluray player. I have an HK receiver, and I wanted a matching set. However, I went through two of them (bought at a different well-known online retailer for less than the amazon price) and both were defective. The first had problems with the illuminated display (there must have been a short somewhere because the power indicator light flashed on and off whenever you touched the player or just walked across the room), and the second had sound problems during CD playback (the sound would either cut out completely, or the player would skip to another track, or there would be a lot of distortion in the sound). I have to say that when the player worked, it was great. Sound and image quality were outstanding. But the problems I've had having to deal with the hassle of returning not just one but two in a row have convinced me to give up on this Harman Kardon bluray player. It's just not worth the trouble. I'm really disappointed because I have a number of Harman products, and I've been a Harman customer for decades. But I have to question what's going on with their quality control at this point. If you buy one, good luck to you! I hope you manage to get one that works because I sure couldn't.br /br /UPDATE: Alright, I'm an idiot. A week ago this popped up on another retailer's site. It was their Deal of the Day, and it was half-price. I thought to myself, "Hmmm, they say third time's a charm," so I gave the BDP1 one more chance. Big mistake. It's now boxed up and ready to go back. The defects with the third one were very similar to the second--DVD's and Blurays played fine (as far as I know--I only watched one of each) but CD playback was extremely erratic. A number of my discs (not CD-ROMs but original music CD's) would take multiple attempts in and out and in and out of the CD tray before the BDP1 recognized them. Almost always, no matter what the CD, the BDP1 has an annoying tendency to jump into the first track too quickly, either skipping around for the first few seconds of playback or missing the first or second note of Track 1 (this has been the case on all three I've owned). Finally, BD-Live just wouldn't work. According to the Network Connection test in the Setup Guide, I was connected to the internet, but when I attempted to access the BD-Live on the Star Trek bluray, a window from Paramount popped up saying I wasn't connected. Refreshed my modem, redoubled and rechecked my connections, but still I could not get the BD-Live function to work. So I may be an idiot, but the one smart thing I did was hold off on reprogramming my universal remote (because that takes a half hour to do), so luckily the settings for my trusty old Sony BDP-S350 were still there. Granted, the Sony isn't nearly as attractive as the Harman Kardon, but it's functional and reliable and it never fails to play anything you throw at it perfectly. If you're buying the HK BDP1, buy it just for looks, and the occasional play (if it's in a good mood) but be prepared to have a standby player hooked up to your system because the BDP 1 is so erratic that you just can't count on it.

Inexpensive Netflix viewing - Red Ed -
Good product that I think is the least expensive way to stream video from Netflix. Only downside, the current software doesn't allow you to search for movies or shows on-line. You go to Netflix.com to search and place items in que. When you turn on the Blu-Ray player, Netflix is one of the on-line services and your selections show up for instant viewing. When you subscribe to Netflix, you tell it you are using this device and enter a code to activate. Relatively simple.
Good choice for cost conscious buyer, internet a bonus - Philip Walden -
This is my first Blu-Ray purchase (and my first Amazon review). Overall I am satisfied with the capability of the device and it has met and exceeded my initial expectations, of which I think most experts would say were set very low:br /br /- Play BD and DVDs at 1080pbr /- Bravia sync with my Sony STR A/V Receiverbr /- Playing media files via USB memory stickbr /br /I did not buy this device for its internet streaming capability. I knew it did not have WiFi built-in. However, I am a very experienced computer user. I also had a LAN drop nearby (via power-line adapter), so I hooked it up.br /br /The set up for wired internet access was extremely simple. The network firmware update (recommended) went without a hitch. After setting up my Amazon VOD account, I was able to access Amazon VOD within minutes. I understand folks don't like the NetFlix interface, but then I don't like NetFlix.br /br /The other internet sites listed on the player's Home internet menu are OK, but not my cup of tea. I'd like to see WGBH Nova On-Line and other such sites. I could not find any channel/means to send my preferences for future site additions. It is not clear as to whether I have to ask Sony, ask the site in question, or ask both. You can get at NASA vodcasts, but through a third-party site like "Podcasts". However, there are considerable delays before they appear on the third-party site.br /br /The network update provided DLNA support. I found this feature potentially the greatest bonus and alas the greatest disappointment. I quickly found a DLNA server app for my Linux box, minidlna specifically. Within minutes of start up I could access all the music, jpegs and mpeg2 movie files on my servers. However, for some unknown reason Sony has chosen to disable viewing of any movie format other than mpeg2, DVD formatted files over DLNA. Needless to say many of my files are mpeg1, and mp4 formats and I am very disappointed in this choice by Sony. These formats work via USB, but not DLNA. I hope that in some future update they will reverse this mis-guided decision.
